Oromyofacial Issues and Eating Problems
From infancy through adulthood there are many different forms of eating difficulties.
Sometimes it’s an inappropriate tongue-thrust swallow pattern, pushing food and liquid out of the teeth/mouth. Other times it’s an over-stuffing problem, or a pocketing of food in the mouth. Some eating difficulties are sensory-integration related, with overly strong likes, dislikes or texture aversions. Dental occlusions, choking and/or gagging and globus sensation (the feeling of food stuck in the throat) are all common issues we treat as well. Some of our patients experience pain or tension with chewing and swallowing, acid reflux, or generally poor digestion.
But what many don’t realize is that all of these symptoms can be rooted from an oral myofunctional disorder (OMD).
