Oromyofunctional
Therapy

Muscle Function Therapy for the Tongue, Lips, Jaws, Respiration, & Head Posture

What?!? You can work out the muscles in your mouth, face, and throat just like you do your core, arms and legs etc. You CAN change the function for better or for worse. Did you know that you should be breathing through your nose, into your diaphragm (light and right), that your tongue optimally should be lightly suctioned to the roof of your mouth, lips closed without tension, teeth apart, and you shouldn't be experiencing pain or tension! If this is not what you do then you may have an Oromyofunctional Disorder (OMD)

We can help!

At BreatheWorks we evaluate and treat birth through geriatrics.

Signs and symptoms of an OMD include:

  • Strong Gag Reflex

  • Dental Malocclusion (narrow jaws, crowded teeth, open bite, cross bite, etc.)

  • Mouth Breathing (habitual, congestion, SDB, OSA, UARS)

  • Articulation Disorder

  • Vocal Fatigue with overuse

  • Voice Disorder

  • Tongue Tie

  • Lip Tie

  • Hard Time Breathing when Exercising

  • TMD/Craniofacial Pain

  • Scalloped Tongue

  • Tongue Thrust

  • Unexplained Excessive Cavities

  • Forward Head Posture

  • Digestive Discomfort

  • Picky Diet

  • Overstuffing Mouth when Eating

  • Chewing and Swallowing Dysfunction

Our General Therapy Goals Include:

1. Re-education of optimal oropharyngeal, respiratory, and head posture and function

2. Strengthening the oropharyngeal muscles (as well as the core)

3. Reducing or eliminating compensations

4. Myofascial release and manual therapy

5. Pre and post procedure therapy for tongue-tie or lip-tie release

How We Can Help

BreatheWorks clinicians analyze your speech in conversation, and map your voice quality, resonance and pitch. Then comes a tailored re-education of your core body support, posture, respiration, and orofacial musculature. This can be a complex strategy involving your tongue, lips, jaw, pharynx, and head and neck muscles. The aim is optimal mobility, range of motion, symmetry, strength, and coordination. It is a full-body approach. Each person is unique, of course, but we are typically able to treat and discharge in 3 or 4 months.

Talk, eat, sleep, breathe better.

Feel better.
